How To Experience The Best Of Brooklyn

One of the most up and coming boroughs amongst the five, Brooklyn has a vibe of its own. If you have already checked my Instagram and Pinterest, you might have an idea to what I am talking about but if not, don’t worry, this post covers it all. Easily accessible through the subways from Manhattan if you’re planning a trip to the big apple don’t leave Brooklyn out. With something for everyone, Brooklyn has made its mark on not just New Yorkers but also the tourists.

Having been to NYC twice (read here & here) in the past couple years, every time I visited Brooklyn it had something completely different to offer. From secret alleyways to art galleries to food popups, one can easily spend a couple days exploring the borough but here are some activities if you want to get the best in a day!

Walk across Brooklyn Bridge

This iconic landmark needs no introduction. Walking or cycling across the Brooklyn Bridge once should be on everyones list. The walk takes about 40 minutes depending on your pace and is definitely something I had never experienced before. The energy is so different. Start early in the morning to avoid heat and crowds.

Picnic in Prospect Park

With the public making the most of sunny days, Prospect Park has a lot to offer. You could take your own food get a quick fix from the cafes around. Or you could even make a day out of it by barbecuing, reading, catching up on those ukulele lessons and what not. Prospect Park also has more to offer such as fishing, bird watching, horseback riding, zoo, yoga, boating, skating, etc.

A small but definitely worth visiting area in Brooklyn, District Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass (DUMBO) provides some stunning views of the Brooklyn Bridge. Walk around the neighbourhood discovering stores selling vintage and unique items perfect for souvenirs and gifting. Also don’t forget to go to the most instagram-y spot here (read here the best instagram spots in Manhattan) on Washington Street between Front and Water Streets.

Sunset at the Brooklyn  Bridge Park

The Brooklyn Bridge Park is one of my favourite parks in all of New York. With breathtaking view of the bridge and downtown Manhattan, this is an epic spot to catch the sunset. Not just that, the park also offers activities such as kayaking, rock climbing, basketball along with lush lawns, clean beaches, fun carousal and stargazing.

Learning at Brooklyn Brewery

If you’re someone interested in history then this place is a must for you. Attend their tour (Free every Saturday between 1 pm and 5 pm) and get significant insight on the past as well as their current operations. Minors (under age 21) are allowed as long as accompanied by a guardian. Do sample some of their popular drinks at the indoor picnic table along with snacks at bar.

Exploring Time Out Market

Housing multiple cuisines in a family style manner, Time Out Market is a treat for the eyes and the mouth. It claims the 21 restaurants represent “the best of the City under one roof,” which is quite a bold statement. Spend a couple hours trying different cuisines, enjoying the view of Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan Bridge from terrace and some live performances.

Weekends at Smorgasburg Market

A weekend market consisting of food and shopping? Yes! Smorgasburg market in Williamsburg is an open air outdoor (indoor during winters) market taking place at East River State Park on Saturdays and at Prospect Park’s Breeze Hill on Sundays. What better way to spend your weekend than with good food, some shopping and a view of the Manhattan Skyline and/ or picnic in the park.

I find murals to be quite fascinating. Williamsburg is home to some gorgeous murals that can take your breath away. Chances of you being just an alley or street away from the next best mural is quite high so keep an eye out. Sharing some of them here.

Safe travels!
