How To Click a Flatlay

Flatlays have a charm of their own. I love love love styling, creating and shooting them as I get to venture out in my creative aspects. And it looks so aesthetically pleasing! It adds so much creativity to your Pinterest/ Instagram or blog feed. It is so versatile and there is nothing you can’t shoot in a flatlay. From OOTDs’ to brunches to weekend essential guides. And now we have that extra time in our hand (which I honestly spend cooking or baking) there are so many interesting subjects for flatlay to experiment with.

“Flatlays are a result of constant trial and error but the results are so worth it.”

But in order to get a decent flatlay it is essential to follow some rules. I did share my basic tips in this post here. Below listed are some thumb rules I religiously follow and has improved my style and photography immensely.

  • Find a Story: Before you begin, ask yourself what are you trying to convey? What is the story? What is the idea? For example is it a ‘Weekend Mood kind of post? Or a monochromatic color scheme? Or a simple food recipe you loved making? Understanding the idea behind it makes it so easy.

  • Find inspirations: I spend about an hour minimum doing research on topics similar to mine. I actually prefer creating a mood-board to understand the colors, tones and styling that I actually want to use. You can check it here.

  • Sourcing props: Props are one of the most underrated aspect of a flatlay. They add so much character to an image and can even help on the story aspect. And we don’t even realize that we are surrounded by them. From a pair of sunglasses to a cup of coffee to even some photographs lying around. You just need to look carefully and get all props together in one place before you begin.

  • Trial and failure: No one ever said that you would get a perfect flatlay within the first few clicks. But don’t be disheartened. To be honest the first few clicks are set trying to understand the frame, composure and light. Flatlays are a result of constant trial and error but the results are so worth it. And trust me when I say that it get easier and easier with practice.

  • Editing: Editing can make or break your picture. I have shared my most basic editing tools and apps here and trust me it is not as daunting as it looks. Framing+ styling+ editing can result in the most gorgeous flatlays!

So that’s all for this post!
