Whimsy in Udaipur!

Hi guys, how are you all? I know it has been quite a while since I shared a travel related post, so that is what this post is all about! If you follow me on instagram, (to check all my travel related uploads, use hashtag #whimsytravels, #whimsyinUdaipur) you would know that I went to Udaipur, Rajasthan with my sister for a small vacation a few days ago. It wasn’t much of a planned trip, we just went with the flow. Here I will be sharing my recommendations on what to do, where to go, what to eat etc.

Sunset at Fatehsagar lake!

Udaipur, known as the city of lakes has got to be one of the most beautiful city I have visited to far. There is so much history, culture and beauty to it. The people there are very friendly and helpful but I would still suggest one to be careful and not be conned by the prices local auto-ricksaws charge. Also, Udaipur has a lot of monkeys so take care of your belongings.

Could stay here forever!

So we left early morning on 23rd April and came back on the 28th of April. I think 4 to 5 days should be enough if you want to explore the city and unwind too. To be honest, everyone thought we were crazy to visit Udaipur at this time since it was going to be so hot but luckily the weather there was just like or maybe better than Mumbai! For stay, I would highly recommend Udai Kothi near lake Pichola. It is a boutique hotel and the food and service there is excellent. It also has a rooftop pool, jacuzzi and a couple of pet dogs. Do check it out.

To visit, I’d say City Palace, Fatehsagar lake, Gangaur ghat, Jag Mandir Palace hotel, lake Pichola etc. While visiting City Palace, we didn’t hire a tour guide but there are many tour guides there incase you want one. We did just fine without one. Now, there are three lakes but we only visited lake Pichola and lake Fatehsagar. Both of these lakes altogether have a different vibe to them. Do visit. Apart from this, you can also enjoy activities like boating and ropeway.

We also explored the Chittorgarh fort. It is about one and a half to two hour away from Udaipur. The road is really good so travelling wasn’t a problem. Make sure you hire a government assured guide since one will not be able to understand the history and trust me it is the history that makes it so interesting. The fort is spread across 691.1 acres of land! But don’t worry you don’t have to walk so much, cars are permitted inside the fort premises.

Since Udaipur is a tourist place, there isn’t any problem with the food. Cuisines like Indian, Italian, Chinese, continental etc are easily available. There are also many small cafes to grab a coffee and maybe a sandwich. I would highly recommend checking out Jheel cafe and Ambrai restaurant for the view. We visited Ambrai for dinner and oh my! the view was breath taking! All you can see is Lake Pichola and the back of  City Palace. The food at the restaurant in Udai Kothi is good too. Infact I guess I had the best Dal Makhani and Biryani there only. If you want to try some authentic Dal-Baati, ask the localites, they can guide you perfectly. Even otherwise, the food everywhere there is quite good.

The type of clothes one carries depends on what time of the year you visit Udaipur. But I would suggest carrying some comfortable and breezy clothes since it is quite hot there. Add a couple of pullovers to your bag incase visiting the place in winter. Make sure to carry a pair of shoes since you’ll need to walk a lot.

There were so many restaurants and cafes by the lake!
Talk about comfort

Incase you are interested in shopping there, checkout the Hathipole market in the city along with the small roadside shops in Old Udaipur. Since I wasn’t interested in shopping, I cannot recommend what to buy from where.

Boating and sight-seeing

So that is all for this post. Hope you all enjoyed it reading as much as I enjoyed writing it!
